Oggebbio

(265 m above sea level/848 inhabitants)

offers a peculiarity: she does not exist. She consists of 15 hamlets, which are widely spread from the lake shore up the chestnut woods on the slopes of Monte Morissolo. All of them have a dreamlike lake view and give insights into nature created by human hands: magnificent gardens, patrician villas, terraced wine yards, many hiking trails.

In the vicinity of the lake one finds splendid liberty style villas from the 19th century – the climate has always been seductively mild. Famous are the “Villa Anelli” with its fascinating camellia garden and the “Villa del Pascià”. Pasha Drahnet - a dignitary of the Egyptian vice king – was alleged to have hosted Giuseppe Verdi in his home and here Verdi was supposed to be inspired to compose the opera “Aida”.

Not only for hiking friends: freely accessible natural beaches and a lido with bar, boat and bicycle rental, water scooter and sunbathing meadow invite water sport lovers to spend the day.

The municipality of the commune Oggebbio lies in the hamlet of Gonte, a short distance from the lake shore. Here stands the church of “San Pietro”, the church with the highest clock tower on the Piemontese shore of the Lago Maggiore (42 metres).

In Novaglio, on the historical road connection to Switzerland, one finds the romantic church “Santa Agata” from the 12th century which lies on the fringe of the hamlet on a natural rock formation like a balcony over the lake.
